Sally Ann (Yawn) Fischer

Sally Ann Fischer, 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Born on October 22, 1948, in Cleburne, Texas, she was the only daughter of the late William T. and Mary Frances (Walker) Yawn. She was raised on the family farm in rural Alvarado, Texas. The family moved to a home in town when she was seventeen. She attended Alvarado High School and played clarinet in the band. After high school, she attended Hill Junior College and then the University of Texas at Arlington.

On May 9, 1969, she married Roger Dean Fischer. They lived in Fort Worth for a year, where she worked for the street division of the city of Fort Worth. They moved to Crowley in 1970, where they raised their children and lived most of their married life before retiring to Whitney in 2010. While her children were growing up, Sally enjoyed watching them perform in the band and attending their many activities. She also liked going to concerts and spending family time at the lake.

In 1979, she completed her teaching degree at North Texas State University and began her extensive and fulfilling career in education. For nine years, she taught sixth grade at Bess Race Elementary School. While at Bess Race she made many friends, one of whom was her principal, Jackie Carden. After completing her master’s degree and training to become a school counselor (and, later, a Licensed Professional Counselor), Sally was the first school counselor at the new Jackie Carden Elementary School when it opened. She guided the students there for twenty years. When she retired, she had served thirty-one years in public education.

Sally’s faith has been important in her life. Most recently, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitney. She enjoyed going to church, spending time with her family, boating with her husband, reading, and traveling when she was able. A very nurturing person, she especially took pleasure in cooking a good meal for those that she loved.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Fischer of Whitney; two daughters, Stephanie Gray of Granbury, Christina (Brian) Zumbrun of Albion, IN; four grandchildren, Haley (Luke) Shively, John Gray, Matthew Gray, and Kylie Zumbrun; a brother, Terry (Patsy) Yawn of Alvarado; and an extended family that includes many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Yawn.

The funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2021 at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Home, 201 N. Bosque, Whitney, Texas. Interment will be held at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery at 10:30 am Thursday, October 21, 2021. Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
