Sammie Young

Sammie Fletcher Young, 99, of Whitney passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Whitney. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Raymond Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Peoria Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday prior to service time at the funeral home.

Sammie was born January 25, 1917 in Whitney to Samuel Sylvester and Frances H. (Bennett) Copeland. For many years, she worked as an LVN at Grant Buie Hospital and Lake Whitney Hospital, retiring in 1979. At that time she began working as a private nurse. She enjoyed crocheting, canning, reading her bible, listening to music (especially gospel), cooking, and entertaining. Sammie always looked forward to attending the yearly Copeland/Fowler Family Reunion. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Very much a people person, she was very faithful to help those in need and to visit them. She was of the Baptist faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three husbands, Weldon Jones, H. W. Fletcher, and Albert Young; and 15 siblings.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Jones and wife, Becky, and James Fletcher and wife, Dawn, all of Whitney; eight grandchildren, Weldon Jones and wife, Imelda, of McAllen, Laura Breazeale and husband, Wes, of San Antonio, Keith Fletcher and wife, Tori, of Yuba City, CA, Derek Fletcher and wife, Cecelia, Dustin Fletcher, Chris Peplow and wife, Beth, and Melissa Wenner and husband, Dustin, all of Chico, CA, and Valerie Andrews of Bryan; ten great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and best friend, Margie Norcross.
