Sara Bowers (Hall), 83, of Whitney, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born December 8, 1940, in Lubbock, the youngest child of Velma and Paul James. Sara grew up in Lubbock and went on to graduate with honors from Texas Tech University. There, she met the love of her life, Bobbie Wayne (Bob) Bowers while they were checking the posted Dean’s List for their names. (Bob claimed it was the only time he ever made the Dean’s List so it must have been destiny.) They married shortly after and had 54 wonderful years together. They had two children, Ben and Paula.
Sara was a wonderful, loving and creative Mom, and a wonderful and loving grandmother to Jack, Ginger and Joe. She went back to school and obtained an RN degree. She worked in the Whitney Hospital (back when Whitney had a hospital) in the 1980’s. Her compassionate care impacted many people in the community. People often told her daughter about how much she helped them when they were in her care. She also worked for MHMR of Texas as a nurse social worker and at St. Elizabeth’s nursing home as head nurse on weekends.
After retiring from nursing, she enjoyed gardening, traveling with Bob, and animal rescue. In her final years, she enjoyed reading (especially WW2 history as it reminded her of her big brother Buddy’s service to the war effort) and watching birds from her window. Her sweet second husband Danny worked constantly filling the bird feeders for her viewing pleasure.
Preceding her in death are her beloved first husband, Bob; her parents, Paul and Velma; sister Opal Ruth (AKA Sis); and brothers Buddy and Gene; as well as nephews John and Craig.
She is survived by her two children, Ben and Paula; husband Danny Hall; and her grandchildren Jack, Ginger and Joe; and by many nephews and nieces.
There will be no services, per Sara’s request. The family will gather to scatter her ashes under the large tree in the pasture below the house where she scattered Bob’s ashes in 2016.
