Sherrie Christine (Renfro) Thomas, 66, of Hillsboro passed away Monday, August 9, 2021, at Crescent Medical Center in Lancaster, TX, after complications from a two-week battle with COVID Pneumonia.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2021, at Walnut Street Missionary Baptist Church in Hillsboro, TX, with Rev. Paul Clark and Rev. Gerry Davis officiating.  Burial will follow at Pleasant Point Cemetery near Lillian, TX.  Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.  Facial coverings are encouraged at the visitation and funeral service.  Funeral services will be lived streamed on Marshall & Marshall’s Facebook page.

Sherrie was born December 15, 1954, in a doctor’s office in downtown Alvarado, TX, to Thomas “Neal” and Mary Lou (Hickman) Renfro.  She grew up as a “tomboy” loving the outdoors, animals and especially horses.  She enjoyed reading books about rural lifestyle.  Two of her favorites were Little House on the Prairie and Black Beauty.  Her mother was very influential in helping her learn about Jesus by taking her to church as often as possible.  She was baptized at the age of 9 in Johnson Station, near Arlington, then as a teenager, rededicated her life to Christ at a church on Sycamore (east side Fort Worth).

She graduated from Mansfield High School in 1973.  On October 4, 1975, she married Sam David Thomas at Lillian Baptist Church and began their dream of farming and ranching in Johnson County.  Sam and Sherrie were very active at Lillian Baptist Church, serving as youth leaders and ministering to both the young and the elderly with Sherrie gifting many Bibles.  They, along with good friends, Dennis & Jan Strait, established a bus ministry to pick up local youth as well as making numerous hospital visits, etc.  Their son, Matthew, was born on April 18, 1980.  Then on September 6, 1983, their daughter, Carrie, was born.  In August 1985, they sold their property in Johnson County and purchased a small farm north of Hillsboro, in the Mayfield community in Hill County, TX.  They grew mostly wheat, oats, hay and did custom hay baling.  They also raised beef cattle and were in the dairy business for a couple of years.   Sherrie began her career with Hillsboro ISD in 1992 and shortly thereafter envisioned and implemented the “Community Learn & Serve” program at Hillsboro High School.  Students would apply for her class, much like an honors program, where students volunteered in the community, gaining real life experiences and training, preparing students for the future.

Sherrie was a member of Woodbury Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, and for a few years as the Youth Director.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Neal and Mary Renfro; and sister, Marylan Renfro.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Renee Thomas of Abbott; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Chris Rogers of Hillsboro; her grandchildren, Brooklyn Thomas, Cole Rogers, Bryce Thomas, and Camille Rogers; as well as her former husband, Sam Thomas.  Additional survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Glenn Wise of Fort Worth; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Greg Harmon of Lillian; and an uncle, Wayne McMillion of Midlothian.  Surviving nieces and nephews include, Michael Grisso, Jamie Grisso, Melissa Wise, Michelle Wise, Melody Wise, Samuel Henson, Danny Wilson, and Christie Schott; as well as other relatives and numerous dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hillsboro ISD Education Foundation, 121 E. Franklin St., Hillsboro, TX 76645 or Hill County 4-H, P.O. Box 318, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
