Stanley D. Stamps, 83, of Hillsboro passed away Sunday evening April 10, 2016, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at First Baptist Church in Hillsboro with Rev. Danny Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Born July 18, 1932 in Prentiss, Mississippi, Stanley was the son of John and Lizzie (Coulter) Stamps. At the age of nine, Stanley was baptized at Whitesand Baptist Church in Prentiss, where he would be licensed to Gospel ministry on July 20, 1949. He attended all twelve grades of public school in Prentiss graduating in 1950. He earned a B. A. degree from Mississippi College in 1954 and a Masters of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA. While at the seminary, he met a student named Glenna Morgan from Hillsboro and they were married on May 21, 1955 at First Baptist Church in Hillsboro. On July 15, 1957, Stanley was ordained at Whitesand Baptist Church.

While serving as a summer missionary during his college and seminary days, Stanley was a counselor and leader in Baptist boys’ camps in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, and California. He later was employed as a music, youth, and education worker in two California churches and pastor in Leggett, CA. After finishing seminary, he also pastored South Columbia Baptist Church in Columbia, MS and served two years as the Director of Missions for the Mississippi Baptist Association in Liberty, MS.

Stanley and Glenna were appointed as foreign missionaries to Ecuador on December 13, 1962. Following a year of studying the Spanish language in Costa Rica, they began 35 years of missionary service in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador; Managua, Nicaragua; and Honduras. Stanley engaged in Christian literature distribution, church planting, and leadership training. The couple returned to Hillsboro in 1996 and officially retired in 1997. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 60 years, Glenna Stamps of Hillsboro; three children, Keith Stamps and wife, Penny, of Chiapas, Mexico, Mark Stamps of Garland, and Rhonda Cole and husband, Lawrence, of Lebanon, TN; four grandchildren, Timothy Stamps and wife, Elisa, of Irving, Angela Stamps of Houston, Clint Cole and wife, Kristy, of Holly Springs, NC, and Sarah Cole of Birmingham, AL; three great-grandchildren, Sahara Stamps, Tristan Stamps, and Silas Stamps; and a number of nieces and nephews.
