Sunday Bason, Jr., age 69, passed away Monday afternoon at his home in Itasca surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Mr. Tom Wood of First United Methodist Church in Itasca officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro with full military honors. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
On September 8, 1948, Sunday was born in Grandview to Sunday and Nellie (Lara) Bason. For the past 60 years, Itasca has been his home. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam where he earned many decorations. Those include the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal of Valor, and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on August 20, 1970 at the rank of Sergeant.
Not long after his return to Itasca, he and Deborah Nelson were united in marriage on August 11, 1973. For 40 years, he worked as a maintenance specialist, first for Certainteed Products Corporation until its closing, and then for James Hardie Building Products until his retirement. Very active in civic and community organizations, Sunday was a member of the VFW, served as president of Itasca Cinco de Mayo for two years, also served as president of the Itasca High School Booster Club, and was member of the Itasca Planning and Zoning Committee. He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Nellie and Sunday Bason; his in-laws, Bill and Willeta Nelson; brothers-in-law, Arturo Cervantes and Dudley Watson; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Sunday is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Debbie Bason of Itasca; three children, Michael Bason, Shelly Bason Crawford, and Luis Marquez; two daughters-in-law, Maranda and Amy Bason; and a son-in-law, Curtis Crawford. Also left to cherish his memory are six grandsons, Darrion and Devin Crawford, Maverick, Cash, Briggs, and Jackson Bason; two granddaughters, Rheagan Bason and Brianna Lamberty; a great-grandson, Braylon Thomas; a brother, Daniel Bason and wife, Susan; and two sisters, Angelina Cervantes and Abby Bason.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been created at the Itasca ISD Administration Office for those wishing to honor his memory.
