T.W. “Waylon” Flanery, 84, of Whitney, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at a Waco hospital. Graveside services for Mr. Flanery will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro with Mr. Bruce Martin, Whitney Church of Christ, officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday, October 5, at the funeral home.

Thomas Waylon Flanery was born April 1, 1928, in Huron, Hill County, Texas, to the late Henry and Dorothy Beatrice (Wade) Flanery. He married Alta Ruth Yates on August 21, 1953. Waylon served as a firefighter with the Odessa Fire Department starting in 1948. He served his country in the United States Army in Germany from 1950 to 1952 and was in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1952 until 1956. After serving in the military, he returned to the Odessa Fire Department, retiring in 1980 after 32 years of service. On his days off, he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Troy Strong. After retirement, he moved back to Whitney where he owned and operated Junk Hunters Palace for about 18 years. Waylon was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed going to auctions. He was a member of the VFW and the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta Ruth Flanery on May 26, 2003, and a daughter Sara Beth Wade on March 30, 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Rena F. Elmore and husband, Dean of Whitney; five grandchildren, Sarena Weatherly of Odessa; Travis Wade and fiancée, Jessie of Whitney; Jason Elmore and wife, Karminn of Whitney; Rachel Wade of Brownwood; Shawn Elmore and wife Skyla of Whitney; twelve great-grandchildren, Willow, Chloe, Amberiana, Kylie, Brandi, Steven, Jacob, Braiden, Mason, Madison, Aiden, and Gage; a brother, James Flanery and wife, Pat of Blum; many nieces, nephews, other relativess, and friends.
