Thurman was born May 1, 1943 to Olen L. C. and Billie Marie Nix at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ft. Worth and lived the majority of his life in Itasca. He was baptized into Christ at age 17 by James Cale in Itasca. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and at the time of his death he was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ. He loved God and enjoyed attending church services more than anything. Thurman loved to keep busy by helping others. He most recently volunteered his time at The Bridge, a ministry of Westhill Church of Christ, in Cleburne.

If you ever had the pleasure of meeting him, you would know he was a true gentle giant. Thurman always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say to any and every one. Thurman enjoyed walking his surrounding neighborhood in Hillsboro, admiring the historic homes and introducing himself to his neighbors. If we were ever unable to locate Thurman, the mailman would let us know where he was last seen.

During his life, Thurman worked mainly doing manual labor, custodial work and mowing numerous yards all over Itasca. He was blessed with many God-given talents. Thurman was an amazing domino player who would regularly beat anyone who made the mistake of challenging him. He had a remarkable memory, if he heard something once he could and would always remember it. Thurman was an avid history buff and loved collecting coins, watches and antique clocks. He was an ardent sports fan and enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks. He was a staunch supporter of the Itasca Wampus Cats. Thurman was dubbed as their unofficial mascot and could be found riding along on the bus with the team to out of town games. It was stated that if you ever needed a statistic for any of their sports he was your man.

Thurman was preceded in death by his parents, L. C. and Billie Nix.
