Vanita Hayes

Vanita Hayes, age 101, of Itasca, passed away Friday evening, September 1, 2017, in Grandview. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, September 6, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with Rev. Mike McReynolds officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Vanita was born on February 16, 1916, in the Files Valley Community of Hill County to George and Clara (Bradley) Sweeney. She grew up in the Files Valley-Pluto area.

On November 2, 1940, she and George Edward Hayes were united in marriage in Itasca. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1986.

For many years, she worked as a sales representative for Greyhound Bus Lines. She loved to travel and enjoyed going anywhere the Greyhound would take her. Always active, she found great pleasure in country and western dancing, continuing to dance into her seventies.

Vanita also took great pride in working in her yard and landscaping. She was a multiple three-time winner of “Yard of the Month” in both Hillsboro and Itasca. She was also an excellent cook. Until her health declined, she spent a lot of time taking care of others in need of help. Vanita was of the Presbyterian faith.

Also preceding her in death were her in death were her parents; son, David Hayes on March 22, 2008; and four sisters and two brothers.

Her survivors include her two sons, Ronnie Hayes and Billy Hayes and wife, Donna, all of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren, Jason Hayes and wife, Sally, of Whitney, Darren Hayes and wife, Keri, of Crawford, Jill Hayes of Pearland, Kelli Hudson and husband, Eric, of Woodbury, Kristi May and husband, Richie, of Whitney, Kerri Kaluza and husband, Justin, of West, Kassi Santoy and husband, Ricky, of Ore City, Jesse Hayes and wife, Stephanie, of Whitney, and Jenny Bullard and husband, Rick, of Grandview; 25 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.
