Veda Lois Gatewood Campbell, 88, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM, on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Smith Bend - Coon Creek Cemetery in Bosque County under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.
Lois was born on November 1, 1927, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Ellis and Tressis (Thompson) Gatewood. On August 7, 1948, she married Fred Knox Campbell, Jr., in Henrietta, Texas, and they had four children. The couple lived in Wichita Falls beginning in the 60's, followed by Iowa Park, Fort Worth, and Lake Whitney. They were married 57 years until his death in July 2006.
She was renowned for her cooking, especially peanut butter fudge and multi-layered cakes; her gardening, tending to scores of brilliant blooming flowers; reading; writing; and concern for the welfare of others before her own.
She also spent decades rooting on the Dallas Cowboys.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred, and a son, Michael Ellis Campbell.
Survivors include her daughter, Gay Williams and husband, DeWayne of Iowa Park; sons, Fred Knox Campbell III and wife, Jan, of Whitney and Mark K. Campbell and wife, Paula of Weatherford; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
