Velma Estelle Fenton Attebery, 91, of Hillsboro passed into Heaven on Saturday, February 8, 2014, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Stanley Lohse officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at the funeral home.
Velma was born in Long Beach, California on September 16, 1922 to Robert Dewey and Lila Mae (Kirby) Fenton. On August 24, 1940, she married James Alvin Attebery and they moved to Hillsboro in 1946. For a number of years, she worked for the Hillsboro Independent School District in the lunchroom and also owned Potpourri Gift Shop with her husband.
Very active in the community, Velma worked with Bond’s Alley Arts & Crafts Show, the Hill County Round Up Club, served as a 4-H leader, was a member of the Hillsboro Monday Review Club, a Century Club member of Hill College, and a lifetime member of 50+ years in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was always active in her church, Woodbury Baptist Church, and attended many music groups in Hill County. Playing cards, 42 and 84, attending performances at Hill College, and watching youth baseball teams were some of her favorite pastimes. Velma was known as Mom and Grandma to many close friends whom she loved as her own family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sherlyn Dianne Attebery Alford; and three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her son, David Attebery and wife, Darlene; daughter, Beverly Attebery Johnson; son-in-law, Ted Alford; 7 grandchildren, Michael Attebery and wife, Kim, Darrin Attebery, Bryan Attebery and wife, Julie, Joseph Stroud and wife, Betty, Ronald Alford and Lori, Richard Alford and wife, Joanna, and Lauren Spigener and Brandon; a step-grandson. J. D. Johnson; step-granddaughters, Kelli and Kenzi Promes; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and her many nephews and nieces in California and Texas.
