Velma Gunter, of Whitney, passed away on June 18, 2017, in Midlothian. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Whitney Memorial Park in Whitney. A visitation will be held at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors from 1:00 - 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the service.
Velma was born on December 18, 1918, in Hill County, Texas, to Homer and Lena (Ivy) Ward.
She grew up in Whitney and graduated from Whitney High School. During her youth, her mother became ill and she became the caretaker for her family. After school, she moved to Fort Worth where she worked for dry goods and department stores until the onset of World War II. During the war, she worked for Consolidated Air building airplanes. In 1960, she went to work for Texas Instruments where she would remain until her retirement in 1982 after 22 years of service.
On October 7, 1969, she married Carl Gunter. She and Carl operated a landscaping business in Plano and later in Whitney following their move to Whitney in 1983.
From 1983 until 2016, she served on the board of the Whitney Memorial Park Cemetery Association where she was active in the restoration of the cemetery. She was known for creating beautiful quilts and also enjoyed doing embroidering and cross-stitching. Velma was of the Baptist faith.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Tom Parker; and two sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Chuck Parker and wife, Nicole, and Brett Parker, all of Midlothian, and Brenda Langston and husband, Ryan, of Round Rock; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bobby Ward and wife Helen of Whitney, Joe Ed Ward and wife, Pat of Hillsboro, and Jerry Ward and wife, Janet of Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.
