Velma Lee Helford, 105, passed away in Waco, on September 18, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Dr. Allan Lane officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 23, 2016, at Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale, Texas with Rev. Ray Perales officiating. A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21, at the funeral home.

Velma was born on January 26, 1911, in Gonzales County to William and Elizabeth (Swearingen) Fellers and grew up around Bastrop. In 1926, she married Dee Helford and he preceded her in death in 1978. Both Velma and Dee worked as contract mail carriers for the U.S. Postal Service for many years.

She also volunteered delivering meals on wheels in the Whitney area for several years - until she turned 101 years old and decided to retire. Velma was a member of Fort Graham Baptist Church and the American Legion, both in Whitney.

Preceding her in death were her parents; son, LD Helford, five brothers, four sisters; great-grandson, Cody Mills and granddaughter, Linda Howard; a half sister and a step-sister.

Survivors include her son, JB Helford and wife Marga of Whitney; half sisters, Opal Duhon and Stella Sweeney; grandchildren, JB Helford II and wife, Lisa; Diana Lee Mills and husband, Bryan, Mary Ingwersen and husband, Rob, Elaine King and husband, Carl, Darrell Helford; great-grandchildren, JB Helford III and Matthew A. Helford and wife, Kayla, Cayci Mills, Matthew Nowakowski Erin DeHaas; great-great-grandchildren, Brian Howard, Shawn Helford, Cory Helford, Payton Helford and Harper Helford; and close companion, Eugene Barto.

Her great-great granddaughter, Harper, is five years old, exactly 100 years younger than her great-great-grandmother. How amazing is that.
