Vera Mae (Long) Cupp

Vera Mae Cupp, 85, of Whitney, passed away on August 27, 2020 at her residence.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, August 31, 2020, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.   Burial will follow at Whitney Memorial Park.  A visitation will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Vera was born to Emmett and Clara Long on May 27, 1935.  She grew up on a houseboat on the White River in Newport, Arkansas.  She was 7 when her parents decided to have more children.  She had five younger brothers and sisters and would often talk about taking care of the younger children and when she wasn’t doing that she was helping her father pick cotton in the cotton fields.

When she was 15 her mother moved the family to Colorado City, Texas where she met the love of her life, James Cupp.  Vera and James got married on May 14, 1952, five days later James was shipped to Korea with the US Army for 18 months.   They raised their two daughters, Rhonda and Terri, in Odessa, Texas.  In 1997, they moved to Whitney, Texas.

Vera loved to play the guitar and sing praises to Jesus.  She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church and the Republican Party.  She loved cooking, especially if it involved frying or baking.  Anyone who knew her loved her and her kind demeanor.   But she could be very blunt about her opinion and had no problem telling you how she saw it.  She loved farm animals, fruit and nut trees, her rose bushes, and her garden.  But most of all, she loved Jesus and her family.

Preceding her in death were her husband, James Cupp; parents, Emmett Sr. and Clara Long; her brother, Emmett Long, Jr.; and her sisters, Peggy Presley and Alvelda Record.

Survivors include her brothers, Ray and Roger Long; children, Rhonda Gary and husband, Kevin, of Odessa, Terri Ross and husband Robert of Whitney; grandchildren, James Lollar and wife Maggie, Brandi Lollar, Chelsye Gary, all of Odessa, Brittanie Goodson and husband, J.D. of Seguin, Natalie Brennan and husband, Chris of Whitney; 13 great-grandkids, Paige, Jayden, Jyrian, Jaimee, Hunter, James (Jimmy) Brooklynn, Brooke, Sullivan, Logan, Kennedi, Harper, and Kambrie.

Memorials may be made to Homestead Nursing and Rehabilitation, 411 Old Brandon Rd., Hillsboro, Texas 76645 or Whitney EMS, 115 West Jefferson, Whitney, Texas 76692.
