Verna Damschen

Verna Lee Ritchey Damschen, 90, of Hillsboro passed away Monday, June 10, 2013, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro after a valiant battle with Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Services celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Glen MacDonald, minister for Hillsboro Church of Christ, and her nephew, Glyn Williams, officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be 7:00-9:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Verna was born March 16, 1923 in Montalba, Texas, the youngest of three daughters, to George and Floy (Wilson) Ritchey. She attended school in Montalba where she graduated as valedictorian in 1941 and went on to attend Nixon’s Business College, graduating in 1943.

On June 21, 1947, she married William Curtis Damschen, and in 1956, she moved to Hillsboro with her daughters, Pam and Pat to be near family. She started working as a bookkeeper for Aubrey Ganus at Ganus Motor Company in March 1957 and worked for subsequent owner, Jim Carr. When Lawrence Cole bought the dealership in 1963, she continued working for him and also for his son, Larry Cole, who took over ownership in 1981. On April 30, 2004, at the age of 81, Verna retired from Cole Ford Sales, spanning four owners and 47 years. Everyone knew and loved “Verna at Cole Ford”.

She was a faithful member of West Side Church of Christ from 1956 and later with College Hill Church of Christ following the churchs’ merger in 2004.

Second only to her love for her Lord, family meant everything to her and she loved them all deeply, each in his or her own special way. She was always so proud of Pam and Pat, and she had a very special place in her heart for Danny. She was “Nanny” to Kevin and Cheryl, Greg and Julie, and Daylan, Lucy, Lily, and Brady – she was “Dee” to Marilyn and Larry, and “Verna Lee” to Glyn and Eddie. But regardless of what she was called, she was loved by all.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her seven-day old son, Curtis Dwane Damschen; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence McCulloch and husband, Robert, and Opal Williams and husband, Roy; a nephew, Larry McCulloch; and a great-niece, Mish Bailey.

Survivors include her two daughters, Pam Schulz and husband, Danny, and Patsy Damschen all of Hillsboro; two grandsons, Kevin Schulz and wife, Cheryl, of Abbott and Greg Schulz and wife, Julie, of Hillsboro; four great-grandchildren, Daylan Schulz of Abbott and Lucy, Brady, and Lily Schulz all of Hillsboro; niece, Marilyn Barnett and husband, Larry, of China Spring; two nephews, Glyn Williams and wife, Doris, of China Spring and Ed Williams of Hillsboro; five great-nieces and three great-nephews, and very close friends, Larry and Kay Cole and daughters Camille, Melissa, and Leighann; and a host of other dear friends.

Memorials may be made to the College Hill Church of Christ, P.O. Box 375, Hillsboro, TX 76645; the Hillsboro Church of Christ, P. O. Box 733, Hillsboro, TX 76645; or Providence Hospice, 4830 Lakewood Drive, Suite #2, Waco, TX 76710.
