Virginia Joyce Morton was born June 9, 1931, and the world has not been the same since. She breathed her last on April 16, 2019 only to start breathing celestial air in her next breath...
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Lyon of Burleson, TX, 2 brothers: John Morton of Humble, TX and Stephen Morton of Austin, TX, 2 children: Glenda Bennett of Burleson, TX and Laura Sherwood of Longwood, FL, 6 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
If you ever met Virginia, you would not forget her. She made an impact everywhere she went. Especially to Glenn Lyon, who put a ring on her finger back in 1950. For 16 years, she and Glenn, her husband of 69 years, traveled in an RV as Sojourners, and crossed America helping churches and spreading the love of Jesus wherever they went.
She was a member of the Whitney Church of Christ and Virginia was known for her crafts. As long as any of us can remember, she has been making homemade bookmarks, tissue holders, kitchen towels, night lights, and scrubbers. She sewed, loved “stamping” and making cards, and her ministry talents were endless. She was famous for her birthday song, where in one part she would kick her leg up. We think she kicked it higher every year. She would send homemade cards and remembered birthdays and anniversaries and made beautiful gift bags for her church. She entertains the family by playing her comb and spoons, a talent none of us have mastered.
To say she loved garage sales is an understatement. We think it was mainly to visit with the people and hand them a hug coupon or a bookmark. She would love to tell you that her whole ensemble costs a total of $1.25! She loved a good bargain and she always dressed to beat the band! Her beauty was radiating from the inside out, no doubt about it!
She could make a mean plate of spaghetti, roast & gravy, pecan pie, chicken & dumplings with one hand behind her back. She could stamp homemade cards, sing at the nursing homes, take a neighbor some soup for their cough, and that was only on Tuesday. She was truly amazing! When she is not feeling well, her favorite thing to say is, “I’m just fine, don’t you worry about me!”
But a favorite memory was back in the 50’s when she would open up the front door and holler, “Supper’s Ready! Time to come home!” Her girls would scramble to get their seats for prayer time and to dig in. So, Virginia, the pearly gate is open, the Lord has just hollered, “Supper’s Ready! Time to come home!”
No one has shown the love of Jesus more than her! He has prepared a mansion with a large craft room and a large kitchen and of course a wraparound front porch where we will all meet for sweet tea and pecan pie! Welcome home Virginia!
