W. F. “Skeet” Degner, 81 of Arlington, Texas passed away Saturday, March 22 at Arlington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 25th at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Frank Liedkie officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Monday at the funeral home.
Skeet was born July 3, 1932 in Malone to Theodore Carl and Della Marie (Schronk) Degner. He grew up on the family farm near Malone, one of six children. After the family moved to Hillsboro, he met his bride to be, Dovie Sherrill, and they were married in the Lutheran Church in Hillsboro on Jan. 31, 1952.
The new couple moved to Arlington and Skeet went to work for the new General Motors Plant for the next 18 years. He worked as an auto mechanic for the remainder of his career.
An avid sportsman, Skeet was a hunter, fisherman, golfer and league bowler. He also enjoyed entering tractor pulls along with his brother, Alton. For a number of years, he was a volunteer with both the Arlington and Fort Worth Police Departments, as well as being an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Arlington. He also served as a Sergeant First Class with the Army National Guard of Texas.
Never idle, Skeet also ran a lawn mowing service for several years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mansfield. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Delton “Dick” and Pat Degner; and a son-in-law, Bill Horn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dovie; 5 children, Janet Haynes and husband, Jerry of Arlington, Diane Hudgins and husband, Doug of Euless, Susan Horn of Arlington, Fred Degner of Dallas, and Sandra Covington and husband, Ron of Mansfield; also three brothers, Walter Degner and wife, Linda of Arlington, Alton Degner and wife Cynthia of Davilla, and Kenneth Degner of Hillsboro; one sister, Emma Cobb and husband, Mike also of Hillsboro; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
