W. E. Peewee Stalcup, 89, of Hillsboro died Friday, September 11, 2009, at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco. Mr. Stalcup was born November 15, 1919 in Fort Worth, where he lived most of his life, son of the late Clyde and Gladys Richardson Stalcup. In December 1936 he graduated from Handley High School. After graduation, he moved to California to work. At the beginning of WWII, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy in Los Angeles. Following boot camp, LST training, and Marine Raider training, he was shipped to Esperito Santo and the New Heberities Islands. Then he was at Guadal Canal and onto Benika Island, and the Russell Island group, all in the Pacific. He went onto Bogginville Island, the Solomon Islands, Guam, and Okniwana. His job description was to make roads and airstrips for the planes to land and take-off from. He was also a heavy-duty equipment operator. He was a member of the Seebees 36th Battalion division of the 1st and 3rd Marine Raiders, Motor Pool, Company D attachment. He was discharged on December 6, 1945. On November 5, 1949 he married Vivian Hollingsworth and she preceded him in death on December 13, 1971. He was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his children, Evelyn Helsel and husband, Jeffrey, of Rock Hill SC and Charles Stalcup and wife, Nancy, of Dayton, OH; brother, Bob Stalcup and wife, Jean, of San Antonio; sister, Virginia McClure and husband, Otis, of Albany, GA; three grandchildren, Robin Lance and husband, Wesley, and Gregory Helsel all of Dayton, OH; and Rebecca Gordon of Acton, MA; and great-granddaughter, Gretchen Helsel of Murphy, NC.
