Wanda Waits

Wanda Tonahill Waits, 87, of Fort Worth passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Rose Terrace Assisted Living in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Tyler Gillit officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from Noon-2:00 p.m. Monday prior to service time.

Born March 17, 1929 in Baytown, Wanda was the daughter of Jim Albert “Pick” and Winnie Lee (Jones) Tonahill. Her youth was spent in the Aquilla and Whitney area before moving with her family to Hillsboro, where she attended high school. While working at Olympia Café, she met the love of her life, Johnie “J. W.” Waits, and they were married shortly thereafter on March 5, 1946. They moved to Fort Worth in late 1948 and made their home there raising five children. For 20 years, she was employed as a packer at Pangburns Candy Company, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Worth Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Wanda enjoyed teaching Sunday school and playing 42 and Canasta among other games. She was totally devoted to her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Johnie “J. W.” on January 21, 2003; daughter, Janet Williams; sister, Cille Holder; and granddaughter, Toni Wanell Black.

Survivors include her four children, Tony Waits and wife, Ester, of Pleasanton, Billy Waits and wife, Nita, of Texarkana, Arkansas, Barbara Long of Fort Worth, and Joan Hodgson and husband, Donald, of Fort Worth; many grandchildren; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
