Wanda Louise (Cloud) Winters

Wanda L. Winters, age 100, of Laguna Park passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023. She lived 100 years 11 months and 2 days. What a great life she had. Wanda was born January 12, 1923 in Kurten, Texas to John T. and May Parker Cloud. She was the fourth of six children. She grew up on a farm and worked the fields as a child picking cotton with her siblings to help support the family. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan Texas in 1940. In 1941 she became the first of her family to leave home. She moved to San Antonio to start, as she said, "a new adventure in life". She met a young soldier named Johnnie Winters while working at Sommers Drug Store outside the South Gate of Fort Sam Houston. They were married under a street light outside that gate known as Rattlesnake Hill on July 6, 1942. They were married for 60 years.

During her life Wanda worked in the food service and retail industry. She retired in 1987 and moved with her husband to Lake Whitney Texas northwest of Waco. She enjoyed quilting, finishing her last quilt just two months ago, fishing and gardening. No one could believe how tech savvy she was. She got her first computer at 77 and was a social media darling. She was on Facebook, Instagram, ordered all kinds of things online. She streamed TV and knew how to navigate all the apps available and loved playing computer games. Johnnie and Wanda loved family and over the years were the main host of many family gatherings. Wanda was healthy and vibrant person. She only took two medications at the age of 100. She lived at home her whole life and remained independent even though she was confined to a wheelchair for the last few years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Johnnie H. Winters in 2002; her eldest son, Johnnie L. in 2015; and daughter Candace Kay in 1957.

Wanda is survived by her son, Joe W. and wife Kathy of Laguna Park; son, Jasper L. and wife Debra of Austin; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo, widow of Johnnie L. of Fort Worth; three grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was also loved my many nieces and nephews. Aunt Wanda was their favorite.

The family will respect Wanda’s wishes and there will be no funeral service. We will hold a celebration of life on January 6, 2024 at a place and time to be determine
