William Gary Cheek was born January 26, 1948, in Hillsboro, to parents W.B. “Dub” and Mable Cheek. Gary was a 1966 graduate of Hillsboro High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Sheila Ruth Smith, on August 16, 1966, at the First Baptist Church of Hillsboro.
Gary worked for his father at Cheek’s Gulf Station, located on the north side of the square, in Hillsboro. He also ran a wrecker service for a number of years until he opened up Cheek’s Gulf Station, located out on I-35. Gary and Sheila raised Polled Hereford cattle and enjoyed competing at all the major stock shows. Gary always had a love of racing. From dirt bikes to hot rods, he so enjoyed watching, building and most of all talking about old cars. After retiring from Dixie LP, Gary took pleasure in shining up his ‘31 Ford Coupe and traveling to the local car shows.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sheila, of 52 years, two children, Machell Plummer and her husband Darin, Thomas Cheek and his wife Amie, grandchildren Samantha, Brittany and Haylee Meeks, Brianna, Skylar and Dale Cheek. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Baptist Church of Hillsboro.
