William “Bill” Knight, 97, of Whitney passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at Park Plaza Nursing Home in Whitney. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at Zephyr Cemetery in Zephyr, TX with Rev. Edward Ray Hunter officiating. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.
Bill was born January 14, 1915 in Bandera County to William Tal and Estella Elvira (Brooks) Knight. He grew up in Bandera County on the ranch where his dad worked and he acquired the nickname “Simon Slick.” On June 1, 1935 he married Mavis Hanks and they moved to Dallas in 1948. While living in Dallas, Bill worked as a carpenter, at the Adolphus Hotel as a maintenance engineer for 25 years, and then at Terrace Apartments. In 1980 he retired and the couple later moved to Whitney. Bill loved music and could sing and play the guitar. He attended Towash Baptist Church in Whitney and had received his 50 year Mason pin.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife on February 4, 1984.
Survivors include his three children, Billie Pauline Hunter and husband, Edward Ray, of Muncie, IN, Gene Knight of Whitney, and Jerry Wayne Knight and wife, Judy, of Dallas; two brothers, George Knight and Leonard Knight; sister, Etta Mae Feldman; eight grandchildren, Edward Ray Hunter, Jr. and wife, Brenda, Jeffrey Dean Knight and wife, Allyson, Jerry Scott Hunter and wife, Norma, Lois Ann Edwards and husband, Keith, Kimberly Ann Knight, Stacy Knight, William Dean Knight, and Jason Knight and wife, Melissa; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and two nephews, Glenis Knight and wife, Mary, and Gerald Edwards.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lake Whitney Food Bank, 601 S. Bosque, Whitney, TX 76692.
