Winnell (Cason) Herrington

Winnell Herrington (Cason), age 97 of Whitney, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Country Club Retirement Community Assisted Living in Whitney, Texas.

Winnell was born October 4, 1925, in Nacogdoches, Texas to Robert and Nell (Ballard) Cason. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in Business and Accounting. On March 30, 1946, she married Miller Herrington in Nacogdoches. Shortly after, they moved to Texas Hill County and lived in Whitney since 1949.

Winnell owned and operated Herrington Insurance Agency for a number of years before retiring in 1987. Always known as an active member of the community, she served as President of the Hill College Board of Regents, President of the Whitney Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Professional Insurance Agents of Texas and held insurance designations of CPCU and CIC.

Winnell was a member of the King Memorial United Methodist Church, Sesame Club of Hillsboro, Lucky Ladies Investment Club, Lake Whitney, Lake Waco, Hillsboro and White Bluff Ladies Golf Associations. She has held multiple offices in each of the different organizations. She was most recently honored by the Hillsboro Sesame Club for 75 years of service. Her words of advice were, “Keep working! Do good things for others and in the community.”

Winnell was an avid golfer and member of the Texas Women’s Amateur Golf Association. She has had 6 holes in one.

She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Cason; mother, Nell Cason; brother, John Cason; husband, Miller Herrington; grandsons, Matthew Duane "Bubba" Howard and Christopher Howard; and nephew, George Cason.

Winnell is survived by her daughter, Cay Herrington Howard and spouse James Howard (Galveston, Texas); grandson, Eli Howard (Poinciana, Florida); granddaughter, Jami Vest (Montgomery, Texas); and great grandchildren, Jesse Howard (Galveston, Texas), Travis White (Montgomery, Texas), Megan White (Montgomery, Texas), Cheyenne Howard (Honolulu, Hawaii), and Hailey Howard (Stephenville, Texas).

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Denise Rogers officiating. A burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Whitney. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.
